What is DIP?

DIP is a design tool that you can download and use to explore the interaction between users and their practices in the early stages of the design process. The toolkit was created by Laura Piscicelli and Dr Mariale Moreno. It emerged from combining insights from social psychology and social practice theory, as part of Laura’s PhD research.

The toolkit comprises four cards: ‘Practice and Key Points’ (Card 1), Material-Competence-Meaning’ (Cards 2a and 2b), ‘Individual’ (Card 3) and ‘Individual-Practice’ (Card 4). The cards are used in four progressive phases:

Understanding the Brief

Exploring the practice

Considering the individual

Designing for the individual and the practice
